Friends of the Library

The Friends of the Westlock Public Library Society consists of volunteers who are passionate supporters of our public library. The Friends are first and foremost good and active library users, but they are so much more; Friends are active in areas of fundraising, advocacy and staff support. They are also a philanthropic group that actively engages the community on behalf of the library.

Friends provide financial support for library projects, programs, and services. The Friends are a Registered Society that is dedicated to helping the Library make information and knowledge accessible to the communities it serves; Friends raise money through donations, raffles, casinos, book-sales and other fundraising initiatives; monitary donations of $20.00 and over receive a CRA charitable tax receipt. The Friends also accept donations of recyclable bottles and cans and forward the proceeds to the "Bottles for Books" program. They manage a coffee bar in the "Friends Library Lounge" area, a welcoming space to visit with friends or relax with a book.

Friends are advocates and ambassadors at special library events and programs often proving home-baked treats and connecting with people. They promote awareness and appreciation of public libraries in our communities and spread the word about upcoming programs and activities. They work together with Trustees and Staff to promote the benefits of our wonderful Library.

Friends volunteer to support library staff; they help by preparing books for collections, organizing arts & craft supplies for programs, making seasonal displays and so much more.

Friends also give back to the community; in 2013 the Friends established a philanthropic scholarship program that awards two local area students with a bursary of $500 each. The "Friends of the Westlock Library Dedicated Student Award" is presented to students who show a consistent effort and a positive attitude towards study, not necessarily reflected in final grades, with a focus on arts and culture.

The Friends meet 3 to 4 times per year to plan and coordinate events. There is always room for more Friends around the table; become a “Friend” today.
